About the Scholarship/Programme
The South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc) is an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)-funded Doctoral Training Partnership involving six UK universities. It provides doctoral research training across the social sciences and combines academic research with professional development, interdisciplinary training and practical experience.
For the 2027 entry competition, SEDarc is offering up to 39 doctoral studentships across its partner universities. The programme is designed around five interdisciplinary, challenge-led research pathways: Living Sustainably; Healthy, Thriving Communities; Inclusive Economic Growth; Secure, Effective and Trusted Institutions; and Transformative Technologies for Society.

A funded three-month placement with an organisation in academia, policy, business or the third sector is also an important component of the programme.
The 2027 competition is open to both UK and international applicants. However, SEDarc states that international students can make up no more than 30% of each cohort.
Scholarship Benefits
Successful SEDarc students receive funding that includes:
- PhD tuition fees at the UK home-fee rate.
- Living allowance/stipend at UK Research Council rates.
- For 2026/27, the published stipend rate is £23,805 per year, including a £2,000 London allowance where applicable.
- Additional funding for research and training, including eligible conference attendance, overseas fieldwork, language training and placement-related costs.
- A funded three-month professional placement.
- 200 hours of general skills training in the first year and specialist skills training in subsequent years.
- For successful overseas applicants, SEDarc institutions cover the difference between home and international tuition fees, with an exception noted for the University of Reading.
Applicants should note that the studentship does not cover flights, visa costs or the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Who Can Apply?
The SEDarc studentships are available to UK and international students applying for eligible doctoral research programmes within the participating universities.
For a PhD-only award, applicants need qualifications or professional experience equivalent to a Master’s degree, including the required research-methods training.
Applicants who do not already hold a relevant Master’s degree may be considered for the 1+3.5 Master’s plus PhD route, where available. SEDarc also states that applicants who have already started a PhD are not eligible for the studentship.
Applicants should develop a research proposal that fits one or more of the five SEDarc thematic pathways. Applications are assessed on areas including thematic fit, project quality and feasibility, and the applicant’s preparation for doctoral research.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Step 1: Choose your research area and university.
Review the six SEDarc partner universities and identify a suitable PhD programme and research area.
Step 2: Identify a potential supervisor.
SEDarc states that applicants should discuss their proposed research with a potential supervisor because a supervisor statement forms part of the application process.
Step 3: Apply for the relevant PhD programme.
Submit your doctoral application through the chosen university’s application system, following its specific departmental requirements.
Step 4: Complete the SEDarc application process.
Applicants shortlisted by their department are asked to complete the SEDarc application form and follow the official guidance provided.
Step 5: Internal university assessment.
The university reviews applications and nominates its strongest candidates for the wider SEDarc competition.
Step 6: External SEDarc assessment.
Nominated applications are reviewed through the SEDarc consortium’s competitive assessment process.
Step 7: Await the outcome.
For the current competition timeline, award decisions are expected toward the end of March 2027.
Important Deadline
The main SEDarc application deadline is:
Thursday, 14 January 2027 at 12:00 GMT.
However, applicants must pay close attention to their chosen department because earlier internal deadlines apply. For example, some departments have deadlines in December 2026 or early January 2027.
The official SEDarc timeline states that the competition opened on 14 September 2026, with departmental application stages running through December 2026 and January 2027. Top-ranked applicants have a further deadline of 29 January 2027 at 4:00pm for revised applications to SEDarc.

Final Note from AK Travels LTD
The SEDarc PhD Studentships provide an opportunity for prospective researchers to pursue doctoral research in the social sciences while receiving structured research training, a living stipend, tuition support and professional placement opportunities.
If you meet the academic requirements, carefully identify a suitable research area and supervisor, and begin the university application process early. Do not wait until the final SEDarc deadline, because individual departments may require applications much earlier.
For official requirements, deadlines and application instructions, always rely on the SEDarc website and the relevant participating university.
