FASPE uses historical experiences in Germany and Poland between 1933 and 1945 as a starting point for examining the ethical responsibilities of professionals today. Participants study how professionals and institutions contributed to the development and implementation of Nazi policies and consider the lessons these experiences offer for contemporary professional practice.

The fellowship is designed to encourage ethical leadership, critical thinking, professional responsibility and the ability to recognise difficult ethical questions within different industries.

Participants travel through historically significant locations in Germany and Poland, including Berlin, Kraków and Oświęcim, where the Auschwitz Memorial Museum is located. The programme combines daily seminars, guided visits, interdisciplinary discussions and interaction with experienced academics and practitioners.

There are two programme groups for the 2027 edition:

  • Business, Law, and Design & Technology: 28 May – 11 June 2027.
  • Medicine, Clergy & Religious Leaders, and Journalism: 18 June – 2 July 2027.

Fellows are expected to participate in the complete programme, including seminars, site visits, group activities and discussions. Following the fellowship, participants must complete a capstone project addressing a historical or contemporary ethical question in their professional field.

Scholarship Benefits

FASPE describes its fellowship programmes as fully funded, with the aim of ensuring that financial circumstances do not prevent eligible candidates from participating.

The official funding provisions cover:

  • International airfare: Round-trip economy-class flights to Europe. FASPE confirms that travel costs are also covered for fellows travelling from outside the United States.
  • Accommodation: Hotel accommodation throughout the programme. Participants generally share rooms with another fellow.
  • Local transportation: Group transportation for programme activities and travel between locations in Germany and Poland.
  • Meals: Group meals during the fellowship.
  • Pocket money: Financial support for meals not included in the group arrangements.
  • Admission fees: Entry fees for programme-related sites and activities.
  • Programme materials: Required educational and programme materials.
  • Professional development: Intensive seminars and discussions led by academics, historians and professional practitioners.
  • Alumni network: Access to FASPE’s continuing professional and educational network after completing the programme.

FASPE also provides documentation to support fellows’ visa applications.

Important visa clarification: Although the programme covers travel and related fellowship expenses, participants must arrange their own visas. FASPE does not arrange or guarantee visa issuance.

Who Can Apply?

FASPE welcomes applicants from different nationalities, religious backgrounds, political orientations and socioeconomic circumstances. However, eligibility depends on the professional category selected.

The six available fellowship tracks have different requirements:
