The scholarship supports eligible full-time master’s programmes lasting one or two years. Applicants must first apply for admission to suitable master’s programmes through Sweden’s central university admissions system before submitting a separate scholarship application to the Swedish Institute.

For the 2027–2028 academic year, the eligible master’s programmes and scholarship application documents are scheduled to be published on 13 November 2026. Applicants should use the official list to confirm whether their chosen programme qualifies for funding.

The scholarship is relevant to professionals with demonstrated work experience and leadership potential who want to strengthen their expertise and contribute to positive change in their communities.

Official information is available on the Swedish Institute website.

Scholarship Benefits

The Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals provides financial support for eligible recipients throughout their awarded master’s studies.

The published benefits include:

  • Full tuition fee coverage: The Swedish Institute pays the tuition fees directly to the Swedish university.
  • Monthly living allowance: Recipients receive SEK 12,000 per month to help cover living expenses during the scholarship period.
  • Travel grant: A one-time travel grant of SEK 15,000 is provided to eligible recipients. A reduced amount of SEK 10,000 applies to scholars from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.
  • Professional network: Scholars become members of the SI Network for Global Professionals.
  • Alumni network: Recipients can join the Sweden Alumni Network after completing their scholarship.

The scholarship is designed to support both academic development and professional networking.

Review the official terms to confirm the applicable conditions for travel funding and other costs.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the Swedish Institute’s nationality, education, work experience, leadership and university admission requirements.

1. Citizenship

Applicants must be citizens of one of the 34 eligible countries. Nigeria is included, so Nigerian citizens may apply if they satisfy the remaining requirements.

Applicants do not necessarily need to reside in their country of citizenship when applying.

2. Eligible master’s programme

Applicants must apply for an eligible master’s programme in Sweden. The scholarship does not automatically cover every master’s course offered by Swedish universities. The official list of eligible programmes for 2027–2028 is scheduled for publication on 13 November 2026.

3. University admission and tuition status

Applicants must follow the University Admissions procedure and meet the scholarship’s university admission requirements. They must be liable to pay tuition fees at Swedish universities and be admitted to an eligible programme at the relevant admission decision stage.

4. Work experience

Applicants must demonstrate relevant work experience in accordance with the Swedish Institute’s requirements. The precise evidence and conditions should be checked against the official application documents for the 2027–2028 round.

5. Leadership experience

Applicants must demonstrate leadership experience gained through employment, entrepreneurship or engagement with civil society.

Meeting the basic requirements does not guarantee selection. Applicants should ensure that their experience and proposed studies align with the scholarship’s objectives.

Step-by-Step Application Process

The process involves two separate applications. Completing only one is not sufficient.

Step 1: Research eligible master’s programmes.

Visit University Admissions Sweden and identify master’s programmes that match your qualifications and professional goals. Confirm eligibility against the Swedish Institute’s official programme list when it is published.

Step 2: Apply for university admission.

Submit your master’s application through University Admissions between 16 October 2026 and 15 January 2027. Applicants can select up to four master’s programmes through the centralised system.

Check each programme’s entry requirements and submit the required academic documents. Pay any applicable university application fee by the relevant deadline.

Step 3: Save your application number.

After submitting your university application, retain your personal eight-digit application number. You will need it when applying for the Swedish Institute scholarship. Entering the wrong number can result in disqualification.

Step 4: Prepare the scholarship documents.

From 13 November 2026, check the official Swedish Institute page for the 2027–2028 application documents, templates and eligible programme list. Follow the instructions for documenting your work experience, leadership experience, education and references.

Step 5: Submit the scholarship application.

Apply through the Swedish Institute’s scholarship application portal between 8 and 24 February 2027. The portal is scheduled to close at 14:59 Central European Time on 24 February 2027.

Step 6: Monitor the admission and scholarship results.

University admission results are scheduled for 1 April 2027. The Swedish Institute plans to announce scholarship recipients on 22 April 2027. Continue to monitor the official website and your email for updates.
