About the Japan Youth Summit

The Japan Youth Summit is an international innovation and project competition designed to empower young people to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Organised by YBB, the programme encourages participants to collaborate across cultures, exchange ideas and develop projects addressing social and environmental challenges. Participants are assigned to multicultural teams according to their selected SDGs, giving them opportunities to work with people from different backgrounds.

For the 2027 edition, projects will focus on five Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
  • SDG 13: Climate Action.

The programme includes project presentations, an international symposium, discussions with international speakers, networking activities and a city tour. Participants can also compete for awards recognising outstanding projects, leadership, presentations and other contributions.

The summit is designed to help participants strengthen their communication, teamwork, critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities while developing ideas that can contribute to their communities.

Scholarship Benefits and Funding

The Japan Youth Summit offers two participation pathways. Applicants should understand the distinction before registering.

1. Fully Funded Opportunity

The fully funded category offers a limited number of competitive places. Successful applicants receive coverage of the programme fee and access to designated fully funded activities.

According to the official website, the fully funded category requires a US$10 registration fee. Applicants must also submit the required application materials and essay and participate in interviews and evaluations.

Selection is competitive, and payment of the registration fee does not guarantee a fully funded place.

2. Self-Funded Participation

Applicants who are not selected for full funding may still participate through the self-funded option. The official website lists a US$15 registration fee for this category, in addition to programme fees payable according to the applicable payment schedule.

The organiser lists the following programme facilities and activities:

  • Accommodation during the programme.
  • Meals according to the programme schedule.
  • Local transportation and designated airport assistance.
  • A city tour or university visit.
  • A seminar kit.
  • Mentoring and pre-orientation sessions.
  • A certificate of participation.
  • Networking and international exposure.

Important funding clarification: The programme states that airfare, visa fees and personal expenses are not included. Applicants should read the official terms carefully and confirm the applicable fees before paying.

Who Can Apply?

According to the official Japan Youth Summit website, the programme is open to young people who meet these basic eligibility conditions:

  • Age: Between 15 and 40 years old.
  • Nationality: Open to applicants of all nationalities.
  • Education: Applicants from all academic backgrounds may apply.
  • Criminal record: Applicants must not have a criminal conviction.
  • Affiliations: Applicants must not be affiliated with extremist or violent organisations.

The organiser states that IELTS and TOEFL are not required.

Applicants seeking full funding should be prepared for the additional competitive selection process, including essay submission and interviews. Meeting the general eligibility requirements does not guarantee selection or financial support.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Visit the official website.
Open the Japan Youth Summit website and read the programme description, eligibility criteria, funding options and official guidebook.

Step 2: Choose your registration category.
Decide whether to apply for the competitive fully funded category or the self-funded option. Review the financial requirements of your preferred category before proceeding.

Step 3: Complete the online registration form.
Enter your personal information accurately and provide the information requested by the registration portal.

Step 4: Submit the required documents.
For the fully funded category, complete the required essay and application materials. Applicants should also prepare for the interview and evaluation stages. The self-funded category has different requirements, so follow its specific instructions.

Step 5: Pay the applicable registration fee.
The official website lists US$10 for the fully funded category and US$15 for the self-funded category. Confirm the current amount and payment instructions on the official registration page.

Step 6: Monitor your email and application status.
Save your registration confirmation and check your email for further instructions. Fully funded applicants should monitor the organiser’s announcements for interview and final selection results.

Always complete registration through the official website and retain proof of payment.

Important Deadline

The organiser’s official announcement gives the following registration dates:

  • Fully funded category: 20 December 2026.
  • Self-funded category: 10 April 2027.

However, the fully funded registration page also displays a general registration window ending on 10 April 2027, creating an inconsistency with the announcement and the detailed registration period shown on that page.

Applicants seeking full funding should therefore treat 20 December 2026 as the published deadline in the official announcement and confirm the closing date directly with the organiser before applying. The summit itself takes place from 10–13 May 2027.
